An individual declines as they age, leading to the increase of hospital and doctors’ visits, and increasing days and types of disabilities. The number of chronic conditions, or long term conditions, also increases as a person ages, while number of acute conditions decrease. Many wonder what they could have done to take care of themselves throughout their life and if science can find a way for individuals to live longer. The most common health problems within an older adult include arthritis, osteoarthritis, cancer, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and atherosclerosis. An older adult can engage in many different activities to prevent these issues. They can exercise more often, even if it is just walking outside. They also should take quiet time to relieve stress, drink a glass of red wine some evenings, engage in occupations that are interesting, and increase the vegetable intake. Health care providers can help older adult clients in a variety of ways. The way a person eats can allow an older adult to be healthier. Increasing a person’s fiber intake can prevent intestine and colon cancer, intestinal disease, gallstones, and constipation. To …show more content…
Physical activity prevents heart disease, obesity, stress, poor circulation, high blood pressure and more. Exercising allows a person to become more flexible, maintain their mobility, and increase their ability to live independently. Although participating in physical activity may become harder as a person ages, they can still engage in lighter activities. Some activities that are effective for geriatric patients include yoga, dancing, walking, relaxing exercises, and stretching. For example, both my grandparents wake up early to walk a few miles every morning allowing them to be two very healthy individuals.
