The One Child Policy

The overall cause behind the founding of the One Child Policy in the country of China was to slow down the quickly climbing rate of population. During the time when this policy was first being conceived and thought about by government officials the population growth of the mid 20th century was 400 million. This means that 400 million new people were being added to the country’s population during this time period. The increase later lead to the introduction of the “later, longer, fewer” policy in 1970. This policy promoted waiting until later on in life to be married, spacing out the years between births and having fewer offspring in general (Golley). Then a few short years in 1979, the One Child Policy was officially introduced by the government officials to the citizens of China.

The policy is greatly aimed towards Han people, which is the main ethnicity in China and is not directed towards minorities (Fitzpatrick). The penalties for not following the rules of the One Child Policy are harsh. The government has the right to fine a couple thousands of dollars for having a second child. The amount of the fee depends on where the couple lives. The One Child Policy is enforced presented that following the policy is the right thing to do and plus no one can afford those pricy fines. The government also offers special incentives or benefits if you follow the policy such as longer maternity leave from work. Also, there is in fact a certificate that you can receive if a couple only has one child called the “Certificate of Honor for Single Child-Parents” (Fitzpatrick). The One Child Policy is also enforced by the overwhelming amount of abortions that women go through in order to not disobey the rules of the
