To begin with, the characters, particularly Randall Mc Murphy, are very different, physically and psychologically. Indeed, the protagonist of the novel is described as a big redheaded man with tattoos and scars. In the movie, he is seen as a small and rude guy, with brown hair, who thinks he’s a badass. However, they both share the fact that they are intelligent. Therefore, the Mc Murphy described in the book uses his size and his intelligence in order to intimidate others and gain control on the ward. The one pictured in the movie can only use his intelligence and imagination in order to do it. The movie character used its imagination when he asked the chief to help him go over the fence and steal the bus full of patients. In the book, the narrator is chief Bromdem and because there is a narrator, it gives us a different perspective on the story and its characters. In fact, we learn a lot more from Bromdem in the book. We learn about his background and we understand how his relationship with Mc Murphy builds up. In the movie, this relationship establishes itself in a very sudden way.
