Abstract: It seems as if posttraumatic stress disorder is not taken as seriously as it should be. Posttraumatic stress disorder, aka PTSD, is a common psychological condition in those who have served in the military. There are a lot of horrible side effects of PTSD, and many can cause unpleasant long term effects on majority of our veterans. One of the many health risks linked to PTSD is Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). Aside from this and many other types of disease, posttraumatic stress disorder can cause anger, aggression, hostility and/or major depression (Friedman). Introduction: The essential focal point of this paper is PTSD and the long term effects it has on returning soldiers who have fought wars in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Posttraumatic stress disorder, aka PTSD, is a common psychological condition in those who have risked their lives to fight for the freedom of our country. However, it seems as if posttraumatic stress disorder is not taken as seriously as it should be. The suicide rates that have been linked to those who have fought for our country is much higher than what’s been recorded. In the more recent years, PTSD had been found in both men and women who fought in Afghanistan and/or Iraq, but it has been shown as an issue since as early as 1861 during the American Civil War. Since PTSD was discovered, it has been seen as a disease where the individual has no control over the outbursts of anger or depression that they have displayed. Posttraumatic stress disorder could be the leading cause of many other health issues. Studies have shown that veterans with PTSD are at a severely higher rate of suffering from many chronic diseases. Many of these diseases usually include the circulatory, nervous, or digestive system. Often they can also cause things like musculoskeletal, Cardiovascular and respiratory diseases (Boscarino, 2008). It has been proven that people with PTSD have been known to smoke, drink and suffer from sleep disturbances (Brudey, 2015). These things can also lead to more serious conditions such as cancer, arthritis, and digestive disease. All of these conditions are considered to be the horrible side effects of PTSD, and cause unpleasant long term effects on many of our veterans. Studies show that numerous soldiers who have just returned from war either do not know they have PTSD, or they just essentially deny help, unfortunately over half of veterans with PTSD do not look for or ask for assistance
