Paraphilic Disorder Part one:
According to (Kearney & Trull, 2018 page 329) Paraphilic disorder includes problems arising from sexual behavior or fantasies involving highly unusual activities. This is not to be confused with Paraphilias which are preferred intense consistent and consensual sexual interest that often is not considered "normal." To qualify for a "paraphilic disorder," patients will need to experience distress about their sexual desires or actions, or those actions would have to harm others (Pappas, 2013.) Paraphilic disorder goes back to the 1950's where the DSM then was more theoretical versus what it is today. In the 1950's the disorder was formally called "sexual deviance." A patient who is unwilling to accept their mental illness are not successful with this type of therapy. It is not until the breakthrough of denial and the acceptance that this form of therapy is successful. (Brannon & Bienenfeld, 2017)

With the many types of therapy, we can see the effectiveness in which it helps. Although, through research often therapy is used with a combination of other treatments as mentioned above. Therapy is more effective when the person can reach past the denial stage and enter the acceptance stage.
