The Latin parenting culture is similar but not exact to the authoritative parenting style. The idea of respeto is where the authoritative style isn’t a make perfect match. A lot of the time rules are rules there is no discussion other than “because I said so.” Respeto is explained as the respect and obedience a child will always have for their parents and elders. (Arnett, 2016) Once a rule was set, there was almost no negotiation on it and sometimes rules could come with an explanation. In Latin culture there is also the aspect of familismo, this is described as the connection between latin families specifically the love, closeness and mutual obligations. (Arnett, 2016) In my experience this means no matter the struggle, problems or fights that can occur between the family, you will always be family and love each other. In my upbringing this meant that whenever I argued with my father or got into trouble, there was an understanding that we still loved each other. My father after scolding me would leave me for a while, check up on me later and hug me.
My father's upbringing also influenced his parenting style. His parents brought him up with each parent primarily representing one side of the spectrum. My father wanted to be the kind of parent that held authority but was still loved by his kids. Another ideal from his upbring was corporal punishment, as a child he endured it
