I will begin by discussing the transference seen in this case. According to Dr. Rinaldi, transference is the unconscious transfer feelings and attitudes from a person or situation in the past on to a person or situation in the present. Within the Patient-Physician Therapeutic Alliance, transference is what the patient “projects” onto their relationship with the physician …show more content…
Mr. Miller claims that women “side” with each other; though this may seem innocuous, it is truly degrading the professional or personal opinion of all women. This presumption is quite dangerous, as it assumes women have more allegiance to each other than to scientific truth or patient wellbeing. By claiming that the physician is “labeling” his child, Mr. Miller reveals that he thinks less of children with Autism. The “labeling” does not bother him, instead it is the label itself and the stigma attached to it. In Psychology Today, Dr. Derald Wing Sue explains how detrimental and common microagressions are; if left uncorrected, serious emotional damage can occur to the recipient of the verbal aggression. These microaggressions reveal implicit bias in the mind of Mr. Miller. If I were to create a program for the Millers, built on three central tenants, I would focus on Autism Support, Family Support and creating a sense of Community for the family. I chose these three pillars of my medical program because of my experiences volunteering at the Friendship Circle in West Bloomfield, MI. The Friendship Circle, “provides assistance and support to 3,000 individuals with special needs and their families by providing recreational, social, educational and vocational programming.” This organization provides a tremendous model for me to emulate. The Friendship Circle first relies on high school volunteers who are “buddies” to children with learning and social disabilities. By doing so, the child learns life skills and feels welcomed and normalized. Their programs include life skill training, job training, sports leagues, music classes and other “normal” childhood experiences (I understand the irony of “normal” being a microaggression). This program is also particularly focused on the emotional well-being of families with disabled children. The Friendship Circle offers time off for parents by providing their children
