One example is in the Intolerable Acts, the Parliament passed a law called the Coercive Acts in reaction to the Boston Tea Party and hoped to force colonists to pay for the tea lost and obey British rule. How did that impact the colonists? The Coercive Acts impacted the colonists because in the colony of Massachusetts they closed the port to Boston, imposed military rule, and the legislature and town meetings were suspended. This shows a tyrannical government because they shut down everything because of the actions of a small group and forced us to obey the British government. Another example is the Quartering Act. The Quartering Act was when the British troops were stationed in the colonies, and the colonists were told the reason was to defend the colonies after the war ended. This is shown when Baron De Montesquieu states, “When the legislative and executive powers are united in the same person, or in the same body of magistrates, there can be no liberty; because apprehensions may anse, lest the same monarch or senate should enact tyrannical laws, to execute them in a tyrannical manner.” His statement shows that the British Parliament acts tyrannically because there is only one group or body that decides laws. He also said that if the government is set up that way, there can be no liberty, or in other words people's rights cannot be protected. Another philosopher, John Locke, said, “This makes him willing to quit this condition which, however free, is full of fears and continual dangers; and it is not without reason that he seeks out and is willing to join society with others who are already united, or have a mind to unite for the mutual preservation of their lives, liberty and estates,...” In this statement John Locke expresses his philosophy on how people’s rights cannot be protected if the government isn’t in agreement with the people. Both philosophers share the same idea that rights should be protected by a government that doesn’t have absolute power. They also share the same idea that the government should be in agreement with the people and protect their rights. An example is the Stamp Act, where the British Parliament passed a law
