December 7th, 1941 was a very tragic day for many people, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Pearl Harbor is a lagoon harbor, meaning it is a shallow body of water separated from the ocean. Most of the harbor and the surrounding land is a United States Navy deep-water naval base. Japan launched a sneak attack on the U.S Pacific fleet at Pearl harbor, with torpedos and bomber planes. Eighteen naval vessels and eight battleships were either sunk or damaged. A total of 188 navy planes got destroyed, not to mention over 2,400 servicemen were killed. Pearl Harbor was a very vulnerable place to attack, it could be approached by any direction. A pre-war Gallup Poll showed 88% of Americans opposed that the U.S get involved in the European war. Then Nazi Germany declared war against the United States, only four days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. This decision was made by Adolf Hitler. The undeclared assault came as a profound shock to the Americans and the German people and led directly to the American entry into World War II with the Pacific and Europe, America had always been neutral with Germany. This brought the United States into the European conflict. December 11, United States was given a copy of the declaration of war. Japan, Germany and Italy all declared war on America. Nov. 26th, eleven days before the attack, trade was demanded and Japan was to withdraw all troops from china to Indochina. On October 9th,1941 the war department, divided Pearl Harbor into five specified areas, also to report the exact locations of all American ships. A coordinate grid was a method used to pinpoint a target's designation. The President knew that the Japanese were planning to strike the base and President Roosevelt let it happen.
