We all remember when, as children, a loose tooth meant that we were going to be rewarded. As an adult, a loose tooth is usually a sign that something serious is going on.
What can cause teeth to be loose?
Teeth may become loose are because of trauma to the mouth and teeth, a bite injury or a tumor. The most common reason for loose teeth is periodontal disease.

A certain amount of movement of our teeth is natural and is always present - even though you can't usually see it. The reason for this natural movement is because our teeth are not fixed tight in the sockets. Our teeth are attached to bone with a ligament that is slightly moveable. When you clench your teeth, for instance, you can feel that the movement - ever so slightly. If you are able to actually see or feel movement of your teeth, there is definitely a problem - and your dental professional should be contacted.

Periodontal disease - often called gingivitis or gum disease - can range from simple inflammation of the gums to serious disease where teeth can be lost. The primary cause of this disease lies in how the teeth have been cared for and the food and drink they have been subjected to.

Left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to periodontitis - which means "inflammation around the tooth". When this occurs, the gums pull away from the teeth. Spaces, or pockets are formed and can become infected.
Periodontitis can cause other health issues
When bacteria enters our bodies, our immune system goes in to attack mode and tries its best to attack and disrupt the invading germs. But, left untreated, the bones, tissue and gums that support your teeth become damaged and the teeth may eventually need to be removed.

There are risk factors for disease that leads to loose teeth
Your overall general health has a definite impact on your oral health. Certain factors can be a cause of gum disease leading to loose teeth.
