If Perseus was alive in the present day, we would value his traits because they would be very effective in how he would function in our society. We would value his trait of being open to advice because it would cause him to make a lot of new connections with other people that could open up different opportunities for him. An example of Perseus getting help, in the book, was when Athena and Hermes had given him items to safely bring Medusa’s head back to the island. Athena and Hermes and found out what he was doing and they had both shared their knowledge and given him items that would assist in him finding the Gorgon’s lair. Instead, he welcomed their gifts and used them effectively. He didn’t even feel the need to kill Medusa by himself. He let Athena guide his sword in the right direction. We would value this trait because our society is based upon building each other up. Along with this, we would value Perseus being a caring person. We’d value this trait because, today, people who care for others can really make an impact on their lives. An example in real life would be if someone were on the sidewalk in searing pain. If another person goes up to them and helps them get to the right attention, they’d be freed from their current problem. In the book, Perseus showed that he was caring when he tried to stop his mom from marrying Polydectes. When Perseus and his mom got to the island, Polydectes immediately wanted her as his wife. Perseus saw what kind of person Polydectes was, and did everything in his power to stop it from happening. He risked his life in order to stop that marriage from taking place. Perseus said that he would bring Medusa’s head back to stop them from getting married. He then, determined, set out to go and slay
