My mother manages a small motel located in my town and my father works as a mechanic for Honda. Within the past year, my parents got separated and sold my childhood home. This separation has been extremely difficult on me and my sisters. I have two sisters: Justine, who is 23 years old and lives in Las Vegas and Marie, who is 39 years old and lives in Torrance, California. When I was born, my sister Marie was already in college, so I never actually lived with her, but she would visit a few weekends a month. I have a total of six cousins on both sides of my family. The cousin that I am closest to would be my cousin, Logan, who is seven years old and lives in New York. I believe that my nuclear family is very accepting and they just want me to be happy. Essex has a population of approximately 3,500 people. Due to it being a small town, everyone knows each other and it is almost unheard of going to a place and not running into someone that you know. Due to its size, there is not much to do in my town, which meant that most children just went to each other’s houses. Growing up in this sort of environment had a major influential impact on me and has made me the person that I am today. I was pretty sheltered growing up and did not realize this until coming to college, as every other kid that I knew was also sheltered. My town was recently named the safest town in Massachusetts, which is something that my town is very proud of. Many people have never heard of my small town and the residents often grow up and move to a larger town. Before attending college, I could not wait to get out of my town, however, over the past few months, I have missed the town that I grew up in and realized that I took for granted all that it offered.
I attended the least diverse school system in Massachusetts, which also had a major impact on me. Due to the size of my town, I attended a middle/high school that was a combination of two towns: Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. I was not immersed to cultural differences and was surrounded by all white people. I would say that my town and school system both are a little unaccepting of people of color because they are not used to people
