I was fortunate enough to have an incredible grandmother who molded me into the person I am now. She was constantly there to push and support me. Everything I do, from applying to my dream school to opening my first business, I do in her honor.
Every summer I visit my mother’s hometown, Medellin, Colombia. Medellin is the fashion capital of South America; respectfully, I grew up around hard-working designers and business women. Every one of my 8 aunts, including my mother, were involved in the fashion industry in some way. They allowed me to help them with sewing garments and working in their stores. I decided to quit my waitressing job so I could dog sit and earn money to invest in my own business. I loved being able to set my own prices and deal with clients while doing something I loved. Meanwhile, I took online courses through a local community college. I specifically took courses that aligned with FIT standards. Eventually, I saved up enough money to invest. I started my first online brand this year, called Lé Romana, or “The Roman Women.” My mission is to create clothing that would allow others to feel like a goddess. Coming from Italian and Colombian ancestry, my brand is inspired by Roman mythology. I started with customizing and reselling thrifted clothing. Soon, I will be selling clothing I designed. I intend on working intensively on this project all through college. After I graduate, I would like to work for other companies to gain experience, and eventually officially open my own business.
FIT has been my dream school since I was a freshman in high school. When I was a sophomore, I saved up all my money to travel to NYC to visit the campus. I believe I will be the perfect student because I’m passionate and I have many ideas. I will go above and beyond to follow my dreams, no matter what it takes.
