Personal Narrative: A Career In The Medical Field

Choosing a career that best fits my passion and level of education was one of the most important choices I have had to make as a young adult. I wanted to choose a career my family and I would be proud of. I grew up in a household with parents who moved from India to America to work day and night so that my sister and I can have a great life with an amazing education. Because of their hard work and encouragement, I was able to pursue my interest in the medical field while receiving the education they had hoped for. But, growing up with parents who new minimal about pursing a career in the medical field, the only path that seemed like a practical career option to us was pursuing the path to becoming a doctor. At the start of my undergraduate career, my goals were set; I wanted to become a part of the medical field. I began volunteering at hospitals, joined the volunteer fire department as an EMT, joined the American Red Cross Club, and started a job working in a doctor’s office. I shadowed various doctors and visited many different clinics around the city. My main role was in the office was to take care of the patient when they walked into the door. I collected their information and took their vitals and performed EKG, PFT, and PVR exams on patients that were there for their physicals. I also helped with front desk duties, which included answering phone calls and filing charts. As I began printing prescriptions for patients, I started to focus more on which medications patients were taking, why they were taking that specific medication, and the proper dosages of mediations.
