A Modern Day Civil Rights Activist. “One of my earliest memories is walking up a muddy road into the mountains. It was raining. Behind me, my village was burning. When there was school, it was under a tree. Then the United Nations came. They fed me, my family, and my community.” As the world has become more and more of a worldwide community the problems of the individual nations, have become the problems of the world. And as the world strives to solve the problems of every nation several men and women have stood out as champions of the fight. These men and women have stood for their beliefs and inspired change in the people around them. Often times these men and women came from humble beginnings. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations recalled that, “As a child growing up during the Korean War, I knew poverty. I studied by …show more content…
He has fought for the rights of all humans, everywhere. And in many ways, fulfilled his promises. The legacy that he will leave will be one of a valiant fight for human rights and peace on Earth. Through his dedication and perseverance he has brought peace and stability to war-torn regions of Africa, equality for those that have none in the city streets, and food and supplies to refugees of combat in the Middle East. “As I prepare for my second term as Secretary-General, I am thinking hard about how we can meet the expectations of the millions of people who see the U.N.'s blue flag as a banner of hope. We have to continue our life-saving work in peacekeeping, human rights, development and humanitarian relief.” Over the next several years it will be interesting to see what actions Ban Ki-Moon decides t make in the face of escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis the world over. However, despite the future he will always remain a civil rights activist for the work he has done in securing peace and equality for the world
