Personal Narrative: Box Jumps

When I started to think about what I wanted to do for my personal challenge I was flooded with ideas, but most of the challenges I came up with put me in my panic zone just thinking about them. So I had to find something to do that was in my growth zone instead, so I could actually learn from the experience rather than just survive it. I decided to go with something that has been impossible for me to complete during my boot camp classes at the gym, box jumps. A box jump is an exercise where you begin standing on the floor in front of the box and then using mostly your leg muscles, jump up onto the box. It seems so simple, but the fear of falling and getting hurt has stopped me from successfully completing a rotation of box jumps during my boot …show more content…
From day one, everyone in my boot camp class has been extremely encouraging and even though everyone’s fitness level is different, we all work together every class to meet our individual goals. I knew it would be easy to ask my classmates for help because they’ve always been so encouraging and understand that the box jump has been a problem for me since the beginning. When I came to them and told them about the challenge they all wanted to help in whatever way they could, my instructor even came over and gave me pointers on how to concur my challenge. While putting my box together I could already feel my body getting nervous, but this time I was ready to go, no matter what happened. With my classmates standing by I was ready to go, so I just went for it. The first attempt did not go well at all, I didn’t jump high enough and I scrapped the platform, but luckily I didn’t fall. As I started to question whether or not I could do this, my awesome class partner, Lynn and my boot camp instructor, Brenda gave me some advice and encouraged to not give up. I listened to everything they said and I stepped back up to the platform ready for another attempt. The second attempt was a success! It was a little shaky and my form was far from perfect, but I did it, I was able complete my personal
