I come from a Hispanic background and in Hispanic families, you do not acknowledge your problems or seek help. Social services were not a topic of discussion among my family. Growing up I was aware of the problems within my family. My family system was a patriarchy, my father being the head of the household. Machismo was a big part of how I grew up, I learned to value myself less than the men in the family. With patriarchy and machismo came my parent’s infidelity and marital problems. My mother suffered from depression because of their marital problems and past sexual abuse. Still, no help was sought out. Among my extended family, stories of domestic abuse, mental health problems, childhood sexual abuse, and substance abuse were talked about
