Personal Narrative: High School Soccer

The happiest point in my life was quickly followed by the lowest. As a junior, I had just scored the game winning goal in the district finals for my high school soccer team. My teammates and I were absolutely ecstatic. It wasn’t just because it was the first time in over 30 years we had won a district final, this win just meant one step closer to our ultimate goal: the state championship. This victory meant we were one of the final sixteen teams left in the state. The next game started off hopeful. We had plenty of chances and shut out the other team, but we couldn’t find the back of the net. Ultimately, the game went into penalty kicks, and anyone that watches soccer knows that penalty kicks come down to one thing: luck. I remember walking off the field thinking this was it, we will be remembered by every fan as “the team that could have been.” We filed into the locker room and while staring at all of my teary-eyed teammates a sense of hope appeared in the back of my head. Nearly everyone in the room still had one more year ahead of them in high school. I figured if we could come together so well as a team this year then what prevents us from becoming even better next year after losing only a few players? The very next day I organized a training session for myself and the other returning players.
