Personal Narrative: How Soccer Changed My Life

Imagine sitting at your desk in the middle of July, the summer before senior year starts, talking to a college coach over the phone about being recruited to play at their school. Now imagine that their school happens to be located in Tampa, Florida, on the opposite side of the nation. Now imagine, in the blur of the moment, a little girl accepting their offer, sitting at her desk in disbelief of the future she is about to have, the realization that she will finally be able to live out her dream of playing collegiate soccer dawning on her. Finally, now imagine that excitement being washed out by horror as she ultimately realizes how drastically her life is about to change. It's a mix of feelings, one with happiness and some sense of seriousness combined. Soon after, the waterworks started. Once you settle it with your mom, you move on and call your dad, and you break the news to him. Once again, that mixture of feelings comes back. As you have your mom next to you and your dad over the phone, you tell them about how daunting the idea of actually moving away is, and how that feeling is overcoming the well-deserved happiness. Your dad then follows it up with the best piece of advice you’ve gotten, “Listen, if you were to go to NAU then you’d be traveling two and a half hours to get there, but, it only takes three and a half hours to travel to Tampa. So despite all the distance that you are caught up on, there is only an additional hour of travel separating you from everything back here in Phoenix”.
