Personal Narrative: My Experience With Reading

In first grade I realized I was struggling greatly with reading, the times I was asked to read aloud, I was constantly being corrected by my teacher. No matter how hard I tried I was unable to read as well as the other children in my class. I was having such a hard time I was moved to a title one reading class to give me the extra help I clearly needed. I wasn't happy about my downfalls and was frustrated with myself. I became determined to read as well as my other classmates if not better. I began being more attentive and participated more in my class answering questions and reading aloud, two things I rarely did before. At first I made a lot of mistakes stumbling over certain words, and at times adding words that weren't even on the page. I was embarrassed of my fault and very self-conscious of my mistakes as I was continually corrected by the teacher and her other helpers. I kept working on …show more content…
Eventually I realized I was being corrected by the teacher less and less, and knowing what I was doing was working made it easier to try harder, to become an even better reader. Then one day in class I read aloud without making hardly any mistakes. I continued reading more and more one time reading a whole book to my class. I was proud of myself, and my teacher appeared to be just as excited for me. She suggested we go to my old class and see if it was okay if I could read the book to them also. My old teacher had no problem with it and eve let me sit in her big wooden rocking chair while all of the other kids sat on the carpet square surrounding it. I was very nervous but once again read the whole book without any problems. After I finished the whole class clapped for me and I felt so proud of what I had accomplished. I felt an even greater sense of accomplishment when I graduated from the Title one class and was able to go back to a regular class the next
