My parents were looking for an outlet to release all of the creativity, energy, and emotions in a productive way. However, theatre was so much more than an outlet, it was my home, my comfort zone, my meeting place for living and learning. The theater experience was my playing ground for growing and dealing with daily obstacles in a language that felt natural. Theater gave me a way to define my academic challenges by restructuring my learning as I was playing out the characters on stage. As I began applying these strategies to my daily life, my academic struggles began to slowly ease up. For example, when solving a math problem I would think of ways to make the problem more logical for me and could usually adapt a theater strategy to help me channel my knowledge to master that math objective. Anxiety has always been an obstacle for me as well. When I’m auditioning for a show, my theatrical training has taught me that the people behind the table such as director, casting director, and music director want to see me excel in my audition.
