By joining the high school track and cross country team to earn a letterman's jacket, I developed a passion for running that would last throughout my life. I loved to run when I was a young child, but was unable to run much or play any sports due to having severe asthma. As I grew older and started high school my asthma conditions improved, but I was too far behind all the other students in athletic abilities.
When starting high school, I thought it would be easy when I joined the track and cross country team. I already liked to run and I did it as much as I could to help me build up my lungs. I found out it wasn't so easy. I was the worst runner on the team. I didn't know how to control my breathing when we went on long runs, so I would have to stop frequently to catch my breath. I didn't know how to set my pace and would wear myself out very early into a run. It was a good thing that they didn't cut people in track and cross country or my running career would be over before it began.
As I continued running in high school I slowly started to improve, but I still was never good enough to be competitive. My passion evolved as I grew older and developed other passions like my wife of 34 years and my daughter who I watched grow up into a beautiful and intelligent young woman. I still love to go out for a run. Not so far and not so fast, but I still love that special feeling that I gives me when I complete a run. I would just like to tell the children of today to find that thing that interest you, no matter what it is, and go with it. It just might grow into a passion. You might just start running for
