Sophomore year of high school I was very quiet. The only time I ever said anything was when I was asked a question. Towards the end of my Sophomore year I figured out that I was going to need to develop some leadership skills if I wanted the athletic teams I was on to win any championships. Baseball was where I started trying to use my voice to lead. Starting with baseball was the easiest way because I was one of the better players of my age group and I knew if I spoke up my teammates would listen and they would probably catch on to somethings I said and may be able to learn how to become leaders themselves. Sophomore year in spring baseball we made it to the state tournament. Playing very well and going undefeated in pool play allowed us a shot at making it to the championship. Before we all went home I told every one not to do anything dumb that could possibly jeopardize our chances of winning a state title. The next day everyone showed up ready to play and we ended up shutting out the first two teams we played. However, we lost in the championship to Roosevelt and we were very heart broken. After the loss I sat down with all of the guys and said, “Even though we lost we have plenty of time to avenge this state championship. Madison was leading and things weren't looking very well for us. At halftime both teams separated and went into different locker rooms. I talked to some of the guys about what was going on and that we need to make some changes and motivated the line to block even hard by saying, “for some of us this is going to be the last game of football we will ever play, so lets go out this second half with no regrets and get ourselves back in this football game and most importantly win ourselves a state football championship.” The guys were all in with me on this they did not want to get blown out in their last game of high school football. In the second half we electrified the crowd we transformed from being a rushing team to being a passing team. We came out and scored two touch downs to Madison’s one making it a twenty-one to fourteen ball game. We score one more time but never did make the full comeback to win a state championship title. The final score ended at twenty-one to twenty-eight we needed one more touchdown and a point to pull of the victory. After the game all of the guys were heart broken, I told them “even though we lost I wouldn't have traded you guys for anything you guys will always be like family to
