Personal Narrative: The Sport Of Soccer

Soccer is a popular sport that is played all around the world. People from South America and other parts of the globe call this sport football. This game requires sports equipment, rules that need to be acknowledged, and each player obtains an assigned position. I have some experience relating to this sport because I used to play for my school’s freshman soccer team for a year. This is not only an exciting sport to play, but it is also interesting to watch.

The purpose of the game is to win by kicking the ball in the goal without the opposing team intercepting it. The number one rule is to not touch the ball by using hands, but it is possible to use a knee, foot, or head. If the player accidently touches the ball with their hand, then the other team has a chance to score with a penalty kick. The goalie is the only one who can break the rule, or if the ball goes passed the sideline, and it needs to be thrown back in. If the ball has to be thrown back in, then a team member has to have both feet on the grass and then use his hands to throw it over their head. A foul means they did not follow the rules and may be fighting with their opponent or injured another player. The only person who has the ability to give a player a foul is the referee. The consequence of a foul could be a yellow card, which will cause a player to be cautioned. When the referee holds up a red card the player is dismissed from the game. The game lasts for 90 minutes and there is a half time when it is 45 minutes into the game. The positions in soccer are defense, forward, and middle. The position that I mostly played defense, which is responsible for blocking the other team from scoring. Offense is the position that is in charge of scoring, and the midfielder plays in the center, and the midfielder either drop back to play defense or shoot a goal. In a team, there are about 11 people, and they are arranged in a certain formation based on what the coach decides. For example, a 4-4-2 means there are four players on defense and midfield along with two forwards that will add up to 10 players on the field, but the goalie is also playing, which is why it becomes 11 players. The key to this sport is speed and communication. The players need to work together so that they can pass the ball efficiently.
