College degrees in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Athletic Trainers, or other Sport related degrees is not required but are becoming increasingly common and recommended. Many employers require a personal trainer certification. Trainers can obtain certification through several professional associations devoted to fitness and related areas, such as the National Association of Sports Medicine (NASM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), American College of Sports medicine (ACSM), the American Council on Exercise (ACE), International Sport Sciences Association (ISSA) and several more.
