According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, about 50,000 accidents occurred because of distracted driving in 2016. That’s way too many crashes just because of a cell phone or a song change on the radio. The FLHSMV also stated that out of those 50,000 accidents, more than 3,500 resulted in bodily harm, and 233 resulted in deaths. That’s about seven percent of 50,000, which is low, but still too high.
Also, Florida law permits drivers to be pulled over just for driving distracted. A Dolman Law Group website article, called “Distracted Drivers Plague Florida”, states that being pulled over by law enforcement for driving distracted is not a primary offense under Florida law. That means that the driver basically can only get a ticket for it if they committed other driving offenses. If not, the driver can continue to drive recklessly.
