Thanksgiving a forgotten holiday. Every year are we celebrating every holiday to the fullest? Thanksgiving is our most American holiday, yet it’s slowly being squeezed out by the holly jolly holiday of Christmas. Every year, businesses, television, and department stores are shortening our time to be thankful. There are currently 71 petitions on Change.org that call consumers and retailers to change their approach on Black Friday and early advertisement and decorating. We need to stop Black Friday from overlooking the Thanksgiving holiday and give employee’s the day off, closing department stores and other businesses.
Business and retailers are certainly preparing for the Christmas season earlier and earlier each year. Décor and festivities start late October and early November to advertise the sales and other potential money making tactics. Businesses and some consumers would oppose the argument of “it’s too early”, they would say Christmas is a wonderful season and why not pro-long it and enjoy what it has to offer. Another year where the doors open earlier and instead of changing it, we stand there and do nothing about it? Are we as customers satisfied with countless retail employees being deprived of the ability to enjoy the holiday of Thanksgiving? If we don’t speak up now and show the retailers and businesses that they are overstepping their boundaries, by proceeding to not create these petitions, we will suffer the consequences. We will end up exactly where we began, difference in opinion on when Black Friday should start and when the Christmas season should begin. It’s a vicious cycle that needs to change. We can voice our opinion with these petitions to stop Black Friday and early advertising from overlooking the Thanksgiving Holiday and giving employees the day
