When I first noticed Andrea Bobby of The Village of St. Charles, it was during a Pickleball Volunteer Group tournament at The Villages at one of its esteemed recreation centers. It was her stance, her poise, and her sheer look of determination that you only see in professional athletes.

In between one of her dominating performances, I asked did you ever play professional tennis, and then Bobby instantly took me back into time, a time where she was a standout at Aubren University, where she starred on the Aubren Tigers women tennis team from 1980-1983, and a pro career that lasted a little over a half-year.

Prior to her career at Auburn, Bobby grew up in Clifton, New Jersey where she idolized tennis players such as Virginia Wade, Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley, and Billy Jean King.

She is currently a ranked 5.0 level player. Since 2019 she has participated in around three or four tournaments a year and plays three days a week. “I saw pickleball for the first time in 2000 visiting my parents who were already living in The Villages.” Bobby said. I finally picked up Pickleball five or six years ago, it allowed me to get my competitive spirit back, and now I'm all about playing pickleball.” The attraction to the sport is a natural, there are so many similarities between pickleball and tennis. You can utilize similar strategies to win in both sports. Bobby usually plays three days a week, at various rec centers throughout The Village. “Playing tennis has helped me on the pickleball court,” Bobby said. “In every pickleball situation like being down, I was able to draw from my tennis experience and play on a high level. It was hard adjusting at times, for example I had to learn how to shorten my strokes, amongst other
