According to the Regional Water Management Task Force, “As little as one tenth of an inch of rain can cause these outlets to release excess sewage and stormwater directly into our rivers”. This means that sewage can be easily released into the rivers and into our water. This is a problem due to the fact that we use CSOs. A second example of this, is from the Post-Gazette, written by Don Hopey. “In 2010, the report says, 226 million pounds of toxic chemicals are found in 14,000 miles of rivers and streams and more than 220,000 acres of lakes, ponds, and estuaries.” Pittsburgh is only 58.35 square miles, and 14000 miles of rivers are polluted with toxins, along with 220,000 acres of ponds, lakes, and estuaries. The same person, Don Hopey, also wrote “The Ohio river ranked first among the nation's waterways for the highest toxic discharges, with 31.1 million pounds. This implies that in the Ohio river along, around 31.1 million pounds of toxins are floating in your rivers..
