Originally composed to commemorate the quadricentennial Columbus’s Day, the oath was then published in the children's magazine, Youth’s Companion. It read, “ I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all .” Following its creation, the Pledge encountered a series of changes. In 1924 , the phrase, “ the Flag of the United States of America” was implemented to clarify that the Pledge was referring to the American flag by leaders of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion. 1954 brought another alteration when President Eisenhower signed a bill to insert “ under God ” after a succession of campaigns advocating to differentiate the Pledge from communistical views . These modifications now make up the creed said today, “ I pledge allegiance, to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all
