In the article “Police in Schools: Keeping Kids Safe, or Arresting Them for no Good Reason?” by Emma Brown, the author highlights different views of placing police officers in schools. A viral cellphone video has spread all over social media of an officer throwing a young girl across the classroom, inside South Carolina’s Spring Valley High, for not cooperating with him. While some are calling for schools to get rid of officers, others want them inside schools to help the school district stay safe. According to National Center for Education Statistics, there are more than 43,000 school resource officers and police officers, as well as an additional 39,000 security guards working within public schools. This also includes parents themselves feeling secure about their own kids. Parents do not want to send their kids to school in which their child would feel threatened or scared of going to school. Many young kids tell their parents about their day at school and if something is not adding up, the school is held responsible. Students who create bonds with teachers, or any school official feel more secure about the place they are spending half their day at. The article states, “Tiffany Wiggins is a police officer with Baltimore City Public Schools. She patrols several campuses each school day, interacting with pupils, teachers and support staff and others.” Brown elaborates and shows how Ms. Wiggins spends her days on school grounds building relationships with the school staff as well as students. Students have the courage to smile and even high-five police officers, such as Ms. Wiggins, due to having such a great bond. Yet many argue that having police officers in schools would scare kids when they see and interact with an officer. Some young kids feel that law enforcements will over use their powers on them and distract them towards their learning.
