With globalization resulting in the increased movement of people around the globe, immigration has become a significant political issue in most countries. In the United States of America, immigration reform has been at the center of large public demonstration and sustained political debate. As a result, the politics of immigration reforms need to be better understood. By its nature, immigration reform is multidimensional, and hence the supporters and opponents of different types of policy will vary. United States of America is one of the countries that welcome immigrants from around the world and former president support this argument in his speech that “For more than 200 years, our tradition of welcoming immigrants from around the world has given us a tremendous advantage over other nations” (Obama,2014, p.1). …show more content…
Most of the time the reform changes into an improved condition, by amending or removing faults or abuses. Immigration reform helps promote opportunities for institutions such as the family, government, and the economy. Functionalism is the theory that various social institutions and processes in society exist to serve some important (or necessary) function to keep society running. One reasons for immigration reform in the United States is to make sure that an individual living in the country is authorized. Research also shows that individuals are the most likely to move to higher skilled jobs as a result of immigrants entering the labor forces this is because they have no experience or are illegal in the United States. “And undocumented immigrants who desperately want to embrace those responsibilities see little option but to remain in the shadows or risk their families being torn apart” (Obama,2014, p.1).
