On the 24th of August, 79 A.D. Mt. Vesuvius erupted. The catastrophe all happened so fast that when the people were killed you could see what they were doing right before the eruption. This happened to 2,000 people. The people of Pompeii had many warnings with earthquakes. In 63 A.D. there was a massive earthquake and the damage from it was still being repaired during the explosion 16 years later.

Scientists have detected a tear in the African plate located under Mt. Vesuvius. This can cause destruction to Pompeii and Herculaneum. The tear allows heat from the mantle to melt the rock on the African plate and to add pressure that causes violent explosions.
