Heroes. Most people imagine a hero with a cape and a sidekick at its side. But today most people’s perspective would change. A church burnt down, and several kids were saved. A group of three teenagers risked their own lives for the sake of others. This is the story of how three delinquents became heroes. Ponyboy, Johnny Cade, and Dally, three so-called “greasers”, live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “It’s like the term greaser which is used to call all us boys on the East side. We’re poorer than the Socs and the middle class.”(Hinton 2) They’ve grown up with no other family members but the people in their “gang”. “Or I could’ve gotten one of the four boys Darry and Soda and I have grown up with and consider family.” (Hinton 3) Ponyboy lives in a house with his two older brothers, Sodapop and Darry. Johnny Cade is a shy 16 year old who lives with his abusive parents. Dally is hoodlum who is always on the streets partying and on the run from the police. While Ponyboy was being drowned, Johnny pulled a knife out of Bob Sheldon, the boy who was drowning him. They both then end up running away to a church on Jay Mountain. They stayed there for a week before Dally came and checked on them and brought cigarettes. Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy then left the church to go eat breakfast. During their breakfast, the church caught on fire with many little kids stuck inside. All three of them ran out of the diner and jumped into the fire-filled church.
