Poor School Lunches the Reason Why Children Deserve More Have you ever wondered why children come home and raid the pantry after school? Well, it could be due to the poor quality of their school lunch. This includes the portion sizes, visual appearance, and the overall standards of the food they are eating. The way they look, taste, and how small they are happens to be enough to make a student not want to eat them, and this leads to a lot of waste. Children deserve better lunches, ones more fit than the current lunches they are provided. In 1946, President Truman signed the National School Lunch Act. This led to the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), a federally-assisted organization that operates in over ninety-nine thousand schools and daycare facilities (Brownell and Horgan 132). This means certain sizes, and products have to be given out, and standards must be met. Often, this leads to a poor school lunch. Students should be provided with better school lunches because the ones now fail to meet standards, are visually unappealing, and lead to excessive waste. First, let us talk about the quality of the school lunches children are being fed every day. They are not what everyone thinks they are. The meats fail to meet the quality standards of those in the fast-food industry and lunches have been known to have traces of E. Coli. According to Grace Chen, “No parent would feed their child meat only fit for pet food or compost, yet meat from ‘old birds’ is exactly what children are being served at school.even KFC and the Campbell Soup Company refuse to buy such meat because of the quality consideration” (2).
