In the depths of the deep sea, hidden far away from society lived a mythical and powerful Greek god that was highly feared and respected by all who knew of him, that god was the one and only Poseidon. The Olympian god of the sea, earthquakes, floods, drought, and horses holds a very important and significant place in Greek mythology (Atsma). He is most often depicted as a trident wielding deity that would ruthlessly command the seas with his super strength and godlike superpowers that he possessed. His strong willpower, strength, and quick tempered mind led him to be feared and respected by all of the Greek people that knew of him and believed in him. Zeus was given control of the skies, Poseidon was given control of the seas, and Hades was given control of the underworld. (Cartwright) Being the god of the sea, Poseidon controlled not only the oceans but also earthquakes, floods, droughts and horses. Atsma lived under the sea in a golden mansion that was decorated with lots of coral and seabed flowers. The mansions were also filled with golden stables that were filled with white horses. All of these luxuries were still not enough for him, and his greed got the best of him when he attempted to overthrow his brother Zeus and take control of the skies. Poseidon's attempt was shortly stopped and he was forced to create the walls of Troy as a punishment (Cartwright). Poseidon also extended his family and had lots of kids with the most notable being Polyphemus, he is very important because he played a key part in why Poseidon was affecting Odysseus’ journey in The Odyssey. Poseidon trapped Odysseus on the island of the Cyclops because Odysseus blinded Polyphemus. I will go into more detail on this story later in this essay.
