It’s still “officially” winter, though here in the NE part of Florida you’d never know it – the weather has started to rebound from the cold, almost frigid temperatures of the last month. The sun has started to peek out and the beach has begun to beckon. You may be ready for summer to arrive, but is your home ready for the heat? Here are some things to think about when preparing for the season.

Going on a short (or long) vacation to a cooler climate? Don’t simply pack up and leave. Scorching hot days can have a negative effect on your home if you don’t prepare before departing.
- Empty out your refrigerator of anything that can spoil. Place staples like flour or sugar in sealed containers and store them in a cool, dry place.

Putting a little coconut oil on the seal of your dishwasher will help prevent it from drying out and cracking.
- If extreme temperatures are in the forecast, place plastic cling wrap over your toilets to prevent the water from evaporating. (Just make sure you remember it’s there when you return or you could have quite a surprise AND a mess!) Turn off your main water valve prior to leaving as well.
- Set your Air Conditioner to come on at a high temperature of 85 or 90 degrees. This will help you conserve energy and save money cooling an empty house, but still protect your belongings from the extreme heat.
- Pre-arrange for pool services or landscaping if you need them. Forward your mail and stop your newspaper (if you’re one of the few who still gets one). If you’re only gone for awhile it’s suggested you ask a neighbor to pick up anything left at your house that makes it appear that you’re
