On December 7, 1941, the United States entered World War II after Japan dropped a bomb on Hawaii. We had managed to stay out of the war up until this point, but this changed everything and President Franklin D. Roosevelt went to Congress and declared for the US to enter into a fight with Japan. The war was started by Japan without a threat or hint of war when they dropped bombs on Oahu. The United States was falsely lead to believe that everything was peaceful between the US and Japan. However, the time it took to get from Japan to Hawaii proved to be premeditated. Not only was bombs dropped on our military and caused massive damage to our naval and military, but they also used torpedoes to strike ships in the ocean between San Francisco and Honolulu. He traded fifty World War I destroyers for the right to build a base to be used by our military on their land in the Atlantic. In October of 1940, Congress approved an immense increase in our defense expenses (Henretta, Edwards, & Self, 2015). In my opinion, this was a fantastic move by the President to do this when we were in peacetime and not at war with anyone. In January 1941, President Roosevelt spoke about the “four essential human freedoms.”
They are freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of want, and freedom from fear.
A few months later, Britain ran out of money to fund the war, President Roosevelt and Congress passed the Lend-Lease Act which in essence said we could help any county vital to the US security.
