There are many things necessary to make sure that adorable children turn out to be functional adults and most of them don't cost anything. Other than food, water, and shelter, kids need to be allowed to harness and use their imagination so that they can gain skills and develop their brains. Pretend play isn't hard to do, especially for children, and it happens all the time like when a kid picks up a rock and plays with it like a car or plucks a daisy out of the ground and uses it as a magic wand. Pretend play in essence, is when a child uses something (an object) and uses it for a different purpose and/or makes up a scenario using their imagination. Many associate “play” with physical activities like swinging, tag, and kickball, but really pretend play can begin starting at the age of two. An article on Huffington post suggests different activities for different ages such as: “from birth to 3 years old: create a print-rich environment with objects to manipulate, touch, observe and interact with including pots, pans, socks, beads, playdough, and musical instruments.” For ages three to ten they propose utilizing clothes, arts and crafts, dolls, wands, tents, legos, etc. As children get older there imagination becomes more sophisticated and the stimulation they face from problem-solving will advance their skills.
