Born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 27, 1910 in Shkup, Albania. Her Albanian parents were devout Catholics. At age nine her father suddenly died and her mother had to look after the family. From a young age Agnes would care for the poor by giving them food clothes. When Agnes was twelve she decided that she wanted to become a nun. Agnes was just 18 when she decided to join the Sisters of Our Lady of Loreto. She left her home knowing that she would never see her family again. Agnes later traveled to India where she took her final vows becoming a nun. Sister Teresa began her missionary work teaching children in Darjeeling, India.
