However to the opposition’s perspective, the non-birth control population, feels that birth control promotes promiscuity, leading to more pregnancies in minors. Many feel that it is a sin; our children should not be engaging in the heinous acts and should remain abstinent. Another claim is that the negative side effects of birth control such as blood clots and weight-gain outweigh the positives. Personally, I feel like the viewpoints are in a way based off of religion, morality, and ethics. Most of the people that I have seen have that do not support birth contraceptives come from some religious or more conservative background. Even my own mother was extremely against me being on birth control as a 17 year old because she believed it entailed that I was engaging in sexual activity; regardless to the fact that I was one year away from being a legal adult and legally being able to make my own decisions. As a woman, we should be entitled to our own bodies and though our parents are looking out for our best interest I feel that most parents, like my own, are not the easiest people to talk to about birth control because they may react poorly. The thought of your child having sex is frightening’ there is no guarantee that your daughter will choose to be a “child of god” and remain celibate till marriage or at least till she’s “old enough”. Personally, if my child was sexually active, which I agree is an uncomfortable thought and I don’t even have a child, I would rather have them on birth control then have them having unprotected sex and have a higher risk of getting pregnant. I feel we are not educating the youth on reproductive and sexual health; in my pre-nursing anatomy class over the summer, I had learned one in five college students in America had an STD/STI, Chlamydia is the number one most common sexually transmitted infection among college students, and that Syphilis as of last year, is up by 19%. My anatomy professor had expressed that it is crucial to be properly educated on sexual and reproductive health because of how easily they can be contracted; it takes one time and you could end up with an STD/STI or worse… pregnant.
