The second amendment is ‘A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed’. It was written on December 15th 1791; to the bill of rights (the first ten amendments to the constitution) it was mainly written by James Madison with the help of others. He is known as the author of the United States bill of rights and hailed as the ‘father of the constitution’. There have been many shootings in America which some people believe is because of the gun laws. Pro gun control Sam Cornell stated on the 18th of December 2012 ‘The bottom line is that although we hear the second amendment invoked all the time, few of those who trumpet it the most vehemently realize that restoring the Founders’ vision of the second amendment would be a call for more gun regulation, not less.’ This is saying the second amendment is used all the time by anti gun control people who believe it supports their beliefs but they don’t read it correctly, only those who do understand that the Founding fathers vision of the second amendment is to call for more gun control. This was written four days after the recent shooting at sandy hook school where 20 children and 6 adults were shot dead. This shows that the second amendment becomes more relevant at times such as these because it is interpreted in different ways depending on your stance. Sam Cornell’s views was supported by CNN in August 2014 when they stated that ‘James Madison and the others who framed this single sentence understood perfectly well that you cant have unregulated mobs running around in the streets with guns’ This Is saying that the Founding fathers knew that if they let everybody, whoever they was buy as many guns as they want they would have gangs running round the streets with firearms. It then says ‘That’s why “A well-regulated militia” goes first in this single sentence’. This shows how important these phrases are when discussing gun control as they come at the beginning of the second amendment, and can be taken to mean that the Founding fathers wanted these words to be followed. CNN also say ‘Regulation is the key concept here, which is why the framers foregrounded this clause’. This is implying that regulation was very important to the founding fathers and thus making the second amendment Important for supporting the argument for more gun control. Also linked to this
