When people defend guns, they will usually say it is in their self defense. Studies show less than 1% of gun use was used in self defense (ProCon.org). Therefore, when my stepdad tells me he needs his semi-automatic for self defense it seems unreasonable. Another reason this weapon is unnecessary is because in a previous study I mentioned, felonies were less likely to target someone with a gun, just owning a pistol should be enough a detrant from criminals. Not only do I, a person who does not own a gun, but many people who own a gun do agree that there should be more done when it comes to who can purchase a weapon of this magnitude. 97% of gun owners support more background checks, 67% agree on banning assault weapons, and 87% want a waiting periods (ProCon.org). Whenever there is a school shooting this always brings up the topic of mental health versus gun control. In the Parkland shooting a semi automatic rifle was used, in the Columbine shooting several semi automatic guns were used, the Las Vegas shooter killed 58 people using a fully automatic weapon, and at the Pulse nightclub AR-15, a semi automatic rifle. In all of these horrendous cases an automatic when was used, and for some reason we continue to sell these weapons. Mentally ill people are everywhere, but the weapons in America and the rules regulating them are a large component to these mass shootings. In Germany if you purchase a gun under the age of 25 you are required to have a mental evaluation, in France they need to have no criminal history, pass a background check, and pass mental health examinations, and Finland must be active in shooting clubs, pass an aptitude test, submit a police interview, and have storage for the gun. Australia has not had a mass shooting since 1966, this is because after a mass shooting they took action. America
