Effective supervision generates good outcomes for workers. All social workers should engage in professional supervision to help encourage and develop their critical thinking abilities. It also helps you develop other important social work skills, such as maintaining positive social work ethics, self-reflection and the ability to intervene in crisis situations. Many, if not most, social work settings require or, at least offer, the opportunity to participate in peer, individual or group supervision. Discussing things that are going on in your intern sites with the supervisor, your field instructor, or a group of social worker can help you sort out your own opinions and judgments and prevent these issues from impacting your work.
