To get promoted, cadets must show that they are competent and are more suitable for the promotion than others. This trait is amplified in effect in the more senior flights, as the number of cadets that get promoted decreases significantly as the flights go from flight 5 to flight 1. Even as a flight 1 cadet, I already invest more than 13 hours a week, on average, on cadet-related events and tasks, so I cannot imagine handling more hours to handle administrative tasks for a flight. But that is the source of my respect towards the NCOs. I can barely imagine the countless number of hours and amount of effort they put into the program and in our squadron, and I cannot help but respect the fact that they can handle all of it, and it works with other cadets, too. One of the aims of the Air Cadets program is to develop good citizenship in youth, and one aspect of good citizenship is respect. Acknowledging someone’s hard work and dedication, and respecting someone for not only who they are, but also for what they have done. In our squadron, since most of the cadets realize the dedication one must have to become an NCO, most of them have respect for the NCOs, which leads to them being disciplined, which is one crucial aspect we must have as a sub-military youth organization.
