“Fact: Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about a quarter of those crashes involve an underage drinking driver” (NCADD). While in a car, one should devote complete attention to the task at hand, and drinking and driving does not allow you to do that. It is vital for society to realize that the words “drinking” and “driving” should never be used in the same sentence. The misuse of alcohol while driving can be detrimental to one’s physical and mental health as well as the lives of others. Through the consumption of alcohol one is putting their own life at risk. Alcohol is a type of drug called a depressant as it slows down many bodily functions. When driving while intoxicated, one has a slower reaction time, which makes the individual prone to getting into an accident. “When alcohol is consumed, many of the skills that safe driving requires – such as judgment, concentration, comprehension, coordination, visual acuity, and reaction time – become impaired” (NCADD). Driving while drunk is the equivalent to having a loaded gun. A loaded gun can accidentally go off at any time and injure or kill someone. The same can be said with drinking and driving. When a driver chooses to get into their car, while intoxicated, they are “loading the gun” and can seriously harm themselves and others. These devastating decisions take place on a regular basis. “In 2012, 29.1 million people admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol – that’s more than the population of Texas“ (NCADD). A dreadful decision by one individual can destroy another life or even an entire family. Drunk driving is affecting more people, more regularly and with horrible outcomes. “On average, two in three people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime”
