Should Rhino horn be legalised?

Rhino poaching is a huge concern of mine and there are lots of arguments on whether or not rhino horn should be legalised. Before we look at both sides we have to look at the reason as to why it’s happening.

Rhino horn is meant to have medicinal qualities such as being able to cure cancer. Ruth Becker published an article to Africa check about medical claims for rhino horn. The articles heading was “Medical claims for rhino horn: you’re better on an aspirin or biting your nails” the number of rhinos being poached is climbing every year. Rhino poaching has in fact been going on for many years however 10 years ago only 25 rhinos were poached a year and now hundreds of rhinos are being poached a year.

According to Li Shih-chen’s medical text, rhino horn has been used for over 2000 years. Vietnamese officials stated that the rhino horn was being sold and bought in Vietnam due to its assumed ability to cure cancer. Lixin Huang who is the president of American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine said that the high demand for rhino horn is because of the claims that it can cure cancer. However studies have shown that there is no link between rhino horn and curing cancer, there is no proof to show that rhino horn has an effect on cancer let alone curing it.

I would consider this source valid because Lucy had a big part in the rhino foundation and she knows what she is talking about. The article comes from the rhino foundation website which gives accurate information about saving the rhino. Many people go onto the website to read more about them and possibly donate to the fund.
