“Death may be the greatest of all human blessings” (“Socrates”). A large number of people are afraid of death because it is unknown. Death can be as quick as a heart attack or a slow as a punctured lung. Socrates ended up drinking Hemlock. It was the only way out of the cell without escaping and going against the Athenian people. It wasn’t fair to him to have to sacrifice himself for the views and regulations of the people. Socrates was wrongly accused, and should not have been executed because of corrupting the youth, being an atheist, and being a sophist.
“Socrates is guilty of corrupting the youth” but the chapter also states that, “there is no way in which you could persuade anyone of even small intelligence” (Plato, 27). One person isn’t fully capable of corrupting a large group of young children. “We are who we are because of a combination of how we were raised and the experiences we've had” (Center). Children typically stand wherever their parents influence them to because to anyone else besides people in their microsystem believe that influencing children is like rounding up kittens on a horse. The accusation should have been excluded as a reason to be put to death as soon as Socrates stated, “I do not converse when I receive a fee,” but also when he stated, “I am equally ready to question the rich and the poor if anyone is willing to answer my questions and listen to what I say” (Plato 35). Socrates didn’t care about earning a fee or gaining money based on his knowledge. All he wanted to do was share his philosophical view with the world, especially a place he truly adores, Athens.
