Prosthetic devices have been used to replace missing limbs and body parts for thousands of years. In fact, an artificial toe made of wood and leather discovered in Egypt on the remains of a woman who lived 3000 years ago is thought to be one of the oldest known prosthesis. From the Egyptians to the Dark Ages to the 1900’s, the material of choice for prostheses has been wood, metal and iron. Construction of these devices were originally focused on hiding an impairment rather than function, but advancements throughout history have aimed to increase functionality. In the 16th century, a French military doctor created a hinged hand, a major advancement in upper limb prosthetic technology. Furthermore, in 1812 an arm that could be controlled by the opposite shoulder with straps was created, much like the body-powered prosthetic limbs of today (Clement, 2018). …show more content…
A push for greater development came in 1945 with establishment of the Artificial Limb Program. The most recent prosthetic limbs are commonly made of plastic and carbon-fiber to create a lighter and stronger device. While devices can now be adapted to perform specific tasks, there are basic components that are included in each design. The pylon is the internal structure that is usually made of metal or carbon fiber and enclosed in foam. The socket articulates with the residual limb. The fit is extremely important and an incorrect fit of the socket can lead to irritation or damage of the skin or underlying tissues. Finally, the suspension system is what keeps the prosthetic attached to the body, typically with a harness, straps, or suction (Clements, 2018). Advancements in prosthetic technology are continuing to be made at various academic institutions and through DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects
