In Seattle, 2017, a man was convicted of 17 felonies after he posed as a film producer to lure teenage girls into committing prostitution. The girls were promised fame and fortune when they arrived in Seattle, and were told they were starring in an HBO documentary. Studies show that more than 300,000 women, like them, are raped a year, and 3.7 million women admitted to unwanted sexual contact (Bonnar-Kidd). Therefore, many laws are established regarding sex crimes; for example, Halloween sex offender laws, pimping and pandering laws, and convictions of both a misdemeanor and felony (Reuters). Many sexual crimes are severely dangerous and are critical to one's health, and making the laws more lenient for those who commit smaller sex crimes is a huge risk. Nobody needs to sacrifice or risk their safety so that a small group of individuals can get what they want. Therefore, sex crime laws are extremely necessary and should be enforced, regardless of the severity of the crime. Correspondingly, sexual crimes include: indecent exposure, sexual assault, prostitution, solicitation, rape, and statutory rape. Indecent exposure is the public display of one’s body and can include peeing in a public place. Sexual assault is unwanted and/ or aggressive sexual touching, and mainly consists of rape, date rape, and statutory rape. Lastly, prostitution and solicitation is when a person sells themselves or others into completing any sexual act; this usually includes streetwalkers, sophisticated call girls, escort services, and pimping (Reuters). It would be heartbreaking to never know what happened to your child, or to know that the man or woman that molested and/ or kidnapped your child is still out there fulfilling their fantasies with more children. In 1985-2001, in New York, a total of 11,898 registered sex offenders were omitted from jail, and almost 300 of them returned due to a second sexual offense (Bonnar-Kidd). If a family finally comes to peace with the assault of their loved one, and, a few years later, the perpetrator comes back to continue molesting people and ruining other families’ lives, then the closure the family once had won’t be so permanent. Of the 900,000 children who are maltreated a year, over 9% of them report being sexually abused (Bonnar-Kidd). Those 9% of families have had a traumatic experience occur with their child, and closure is the one thing they can get. Closure is important because it is the final step into moving on and accepting what had occurred, and anyone who has had such a traumatic experience deserves to move
